There is nothing in the world like this bakery’s thin lemon-flavored cookies.
Years ago, I visited Winston-Salem with my then partner while on a trip to see his brother. You may have heard me say this, but whenever I visit a new area, I look for bakeries. My former partner’s brother recommended Dewey’s Bakery. We visited their flagship location in the Thruway Shopping Center, and I immediately fell in love with their thin, crisp Moravian cookies. They are deliciously amazing.
Years later, when doing strategic communications work in Winston Salem, I would stop over to Dewey’s and enjoy either a slice of cake or a small box of cookies. This establishment has been a favorite since 2012. And now, twelve years later, when I want to treat myself, I order a box of Dewey’s Meyer Lemon cookies and savor each one, down to the last bite.
Originally opened in 1930, Dewey’s has a unique and compelling story. Founded by immigrants from Moravia, the bakery has a commitment to service, evidenced by their willingness to donate thousands of dollars to schools, churches and social good projects. They note on their website that they’ve “put 4 million dollars back into the community through partnerships with North Carolina schools, churches, and other nonprofits.”
Operating during the great depression, Dewey’s owners was concerned about sugar rationing. Remarkably, their customers stepped in to help. Patrons ordering cakes offered to bring in a cup of sugar to help the bakery fulfill the customer’s order. This has got to be the coolest bakery-related story I’ve heard thus far.
While my favorite is the Meyer Lemon cookie, many fans adore the pink lemonade cake. The best part is that this bakery ships nationwide and their products are in many grocery stores. You can visit this grocery locator to find a location near you. And if all else fails, you can also order the cookies via Amazon.
