You can access this bakery during the day and in the evenings, from the front or back door.
My family spent the July 4 holiday in beautiful Martha’s Vineyard. We enjoyed Jaws Beach in Edgartown, the beach in Oak Bluffs, the oldest carousel in the world (also in Oak Bluffs), and a host of charming restaurants. We also fell in love with Back Door Donuts. The donuts were irresitible and the bakery’s story of origin made frequenting the establishment even more enjoyable.
This Place is Magical and Accommodating
The front of the bakery is open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and patrons can show up at the back door to purchase sweet treats from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. The back door tradition began in 1971. The company’s website notes that its then owner, Peter White, “initiated the “Back-Door” sales tradition. No set hours -if you craved a donut at 4 am, Peter and his team were there to oblige.”
Certainly, if you’re a bakery lover, you’ve likely experienced wanting something sweet late at night; perhaps after dinner, a night of dancing, or an evening out on the town. From a marketing standpoint, the name of the bakery couldn’t be better. It describes what the bakery is about with three simple words; back door donuts.
Customers Aren’t Constrained
Back Door Donuts patrons can enjoy treats throughout the day by ordering online or arranging delivery. Customers aren’t constrained by typical bakery hours. Although the bakery specializes in donuts, they also offer cookies, custom cakes, cupcakes and pastries. During my most recent visit, I purchased a cinnamon sugar donut. I intended to eat just one bite, but looked up and I’d eaten the whole thing. I returned the next day and bought a chocolate chip cookie. It was scrumptious.
Hidden Gem
Although I’ve been to Martha’s Vineyard several times, I’d never visited this gem; it is tucked away in an alley of sorts. It is located next to the post office in Oakbluffs at 1-11 Kennebec Avenue.
What’s Special About This Place?
Back Door Donuts prioritizes the comfort of customers. In addition to having two entry points, and a cool name, I love the fact that the bakery is open in the evenings. It is unusual to find bakeries that are open beyond 5 or 6 pm, let alone one that offers evening hours. That fact alone makes Back Door Donuts special.
For these reasons alone, this bakery is worth multiple visits. I can’t wait to go back.
