You can have both; food that tastes good and is good for your body.
It was a joy to visit White Lion Baking Company. Owned by Elizabeth Miles, the bakery offers sweet and savory treats to meet customers’ health and lifestyle needs. All of the bakery’s products are grain-free, gluten-free, and refined-sugar free. And if you have trouble tolerating dairy, the bakery has dairy-free or vegan options. I purchased the gluten- and dairy-free, triple dipped chocolate donut which was phenomenal. It was rich and dense, meaning a couple of bites were enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.
In addition to baked goods, White Lion also offers products from Jeni’s. Jeni’s was founded in 2002 by Jeni Britton, who is from my hometown of Columbus, Ohio. The company offers splendid frozen treats, including dairy-free ice cream. It is always comforting to see things that remind me of home when I’m on the road. Walking into the bakery and immediately seeing Jeni’s products was comforting and affirming; “I was in the right place, I quietly mused to myself.”
What Makes This Place Special?
There are at least two things that make this bakery special. First, the owner appears to have a strong entrepreneurial mind. She isn’t just whipping up sweet treats, but appears to be on a mission to grow and I love that for her and all of us. Next, I appreciate that this bakery is firmly gluten- and grain-free. There are a host of bakeries that offer one or two gluten-free items. However, everything on this bakery’s menu is gluten and grain free, with many dairy free, or vegan or keto options.
To my former point, as a small business owner, I know entrepreneurship can be challenging. That’s why I love meeting smart people with good business sense. They inspire me to work harder and smarter.
Multiple Ways to Serve Patrons
Miles has clearly done a thing or two right. In addition to a retail store in Newton, a bakehouse with a retail counter in Mashpee, their products are offered in a host of stores in Cape Cod and New England, including Whole Foods. I love that Miles is expanding her market and giving customers multiple ways to enjoy White Lion Baking Company’s products.
Plenty of Options for Gluten-Free, Dairy Free or Paleo Patrons
Additionally, for those of us with health concerns or sensitivities, White Lion has a certified gluten- and grain-free bakehouse in Mashpee. No more concerns about food mix-ups that could cause mild or severe health issues.
Checking Things Off My “To Do” List
While I originally didn’t know that White Lion was gluten-free, I was pleasantly surprised for more reasons than one. At the start of the year, I set an intention to visit at least three gluten-free bakeries in 2024. Not only are gluten-free items easier on my digestive system, but I’ve learned that taste isn’t sacrificed merely because an item is gluten-free or diary-free. Patrons can have both. To date, I’ve visited at least five gluten-free bakeries, and its only July.
I’ve shared why I love this bakery. Now its your turn. If this is a place you’ve visited, tell me in the comments what you think. And if you haven’t already planned your visit, or return visit, it’s time to get to work.
