I live nearly 20 miles from Bakes by Lo but will gladly drive every single mile just to enjoy the lemon poppy seed muffins.
The Columbus region has several food halls such as the Trolley District’s East Market, the North Market in downtown Columbus, North Market Bridge Street in Dublin, Bubbly Hall, Budd Hall in Italian Village, the Center Street Market in Hilliard, and likely more. But there is only one food hall that has Bakes by Lo and that is the Center Street Market. This food hall also boasts The Cheesecake Girl, which is likely lovely for those without diary sensitivities (I am lactose intolerant and unfortunately cannot indulge).
Now I don’t mean to suggest that these other food halls don’t have bakeries. The North Market Bridge Street recently added Littleton’s Market Bakery, and visiting Littleton’s is an experience unto itself. However, two things can be true at once and Bakes by Lo is such a delightful bakery with a myriad of treats to offer.
What’s Special About This Place?
Like many bakeries, Bakes by Lo began as a home-bakery venture. Laura Young founded it in 2015. They offer decorated sugar cookies, oatmeal cream pies, gluten-free chocolate chip cookies, brownies, blondies, muffins and scones (on the weekends), cakes and cupcakes (on occasion), and a host of hot and cold beverage options. Young notes on her website that her favorite thing to bake is kolache, which is a Slovak sweet roll. The treat is available around the holidays but check in with the bakery to confirm when this treat will make its appearance.
In addition to its wonderful location, I love the name; its short, memorable and catchy. I also appreciate that this bakery is open late on the weekends. In a post for The Best Bakeries In blog, I explain why bakeries with nontraditional hours will always be a win in my book.
If you do not live in Hilliard, and weren’t tipped off by a dedicated patron, you could miss this gem of a bakery which opened in the Center Street Market in 2020.
What is My Favorite Treat from Bakes by Lo?
I really enjoy the chocolate chip cookie and the lemon poppy seed muffin. For what it’s worth, the lemon poppy seed muffin was almost too beautiful to eat. It had a thin layer of drizzled icing, and every morsel melted in my mouth.
I live nearly 20 miles from Bakes by Lo but will gladly drive every single mile just to enjoy the lemon poppy seed muffin. Its truly that good.
If you haven’t visited, it’s time to plan your trip. Bakes by Lo is located at 5354 Center Street in Hilliard.
